Congratulations to Handler Kelsey/K9 Redden and Sergeant Brehm/K9 Buzz on their recent IPWDA Disaster Search certification
K-9 Operations Team 2016 CertificationsHandler Kelsey and Sergeant Brehm traveled to Sevierville, TN Oct. 8-13 along with their K9 partners Redden and Buzz to participate in the International Police Work Dog Association (IPWDA) Nationals training and certification events.  They both successfully passed their Disaster Certifications and are now ready to respond to search scenarios that involve tornadoes, building collapse, and other natural or man-made disasters in the region. The Disaster Certification is a lengthy process that requires the K9s to pass multiple elements.  The first element involves navigation of an extensive obstacles course within a time limit, including climbing an 8 foot ladder and navigating a narrow plank back to the ground.  They must also successfully pass three separate search elements, including a rubble pile search, a collapsed structure search, and a building search, locating missing subjects in each scenario within a specific time limit.  As with all the K9 certifications, achieving this credential is very much a team effort that reflects the continuous training and dedication of all the K9 Operations Team members.
